There isn’t a lot of information about the upcoming film, but never-the-less, I have a lot of (very positive) feelings about it. So, here’s everything known thus far about the Archie movie, and my personal reaction to it.
1. It will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and I am really happy about that. First of all, Aguirre-Sacasa clearly loves the comic and its multiverse. His first play was called Archie’s Weird Fantasy, and was about the titular character coming out of the closet. I can appreciate the irony that Archie Comics hired a writer they threatened to sue 10 years ago.
2. Aguirre-Sacasa has some awesome writing cred behind him. We know that he can write about teenagers really well, as he writes for Glee. However, we also know that he’s not married to the sugar sweet teen angst of Glee/traditional Archie Comics. (Though he penned the Archie/Glee crossover!!) He says, “There are parts of the story that I think people will be surprised how dark and real it gets.”
(Sidenote: Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the graphic novel version of Steven King’s The Stand. He’ll be penning the much anticipated Afterlife with Archie, which he says will be reminiscent of Evil Dead and Pet Semetary. He also wrote the upcoming Carrie remake.)
3. We also know that Jason Moore is directing the Archie movie. Did you see Pitch Perfect? It was hilarious. Like, despite loving Archie, I mostly steer clear of schmaltzy teen sweetness, and Pitch Perfect was perfection. Like, seriously, watch Pitch Perfect and appreciate Rebel Wilson for the rest of your life.
4. Please let this be a “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again” redemption, because that was painfully terrible.
These are just my thoughts about this new announcement. As more details develop, I’ll be sure to post them here.
